Graduate Admissions and Funding Opportunities

Admissions

Applicants for graduate work in metallurgical and materials engineering must apply for admission to  UA’s Graduate School.

Regular admission may be granted to applicants who have a metallurgical or materials engineering degree from an ABET accredited program and an overall GPA above 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. Metallurgical or materials engineering graduates from non ABET accredited programs can be awarded regular admission if they have an overall GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. Conditional admission may be granted to applicants who do not meet these requirements. International students are usually required to have an English Proficiency Test score (such as TOEFL, IELTS)

The minimum requirements can be found via the links below:

NOTE: During the COVID-19 crisis, GRE scores are not required for students applying for spring, summer, and fall 2021

Financial Assistance

The Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering offers financial assistance to outstanding applicants in the form of teaching and research assistantships. A half-time teaching or research assistantship provides a competitive stipend and a full-tuition scholarship for the academic year. A student applying for graduate studies in the Department of Metallurgical and Material Engineering is automatically considered for a departmental assistantship during the review of the application materials. Continuing students must complete the departmental assistantship application. Notices of continuing assistantship applications and deadlines are made by the Department during fall and spring semesters.

The Department awards teaching assistantships (GTA) on the basis of expected teaching ability. An individual faculty member, who has sponsored research funds at the professor’s disposal, awards research assistantships (GRA). A GRA appointment is made on the basis of mutual interests between students and professors. Only students who maintain an acceptable performance level are eligible for assistantships. It is best to contact faculty members with a shared research interest to inquire if they have opportunities. It is helpful to include a resume in the email to potential faculty.

Application Deadline

Applications are accepted year-round. However, there are better times than others to apply in order to be considered for fellowships. Apply by mid to late fall in order to receive an acceptance decision by the early part of the calendar year to be considered for a fellowship.
